April 2015 Topbox Unboxing & Review

0

What I got this month (>50% review):

LA Splash - Diamond Lipgloss
This is a bright fuchsia pink color gloss with LOTS of shimmers in it. I usually don't wear glosses with that much shimmer as I don't feel like swallowing any... haha. Also, some shimmery gloss can feel quite gritty/grainy on the lips. We shall see!

Refresh Botanicals - 4-step  Makeup Remover, Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer
Foil package products... Usually these are only for one time use and you can't really determine whether you like it or not. But I will be throwing these into my gym bag or saving them for upcoming short trips. Botanical sounds nice to me, they contains cucumber extract and cornflower... all the good stuff!

Matrix - Smooth Setter
This is a hair smoother cream you  apply on damp hair before blow drying. I have already tried it once, but my hair is not too crazy out of control, so I wasn't able to tell if it added extra smoothness. I am glad to get this since I don't have anything similar.

Sweet Pea Soap Company - Mango Papaya Soap
Soap with natural ingredients? Give it to me right now! This soap smells nice, but its not THAT fruity as you would expect from the name "Mango Papaya". I have used this already and it works nice just like a normal soap, it lathers up less than usual, but that doesn't bother me. But the soap gets really soggy and soft in the shower, probably because of the high content of natural ingredients. Not bad overall!

Extra:
Hawaiian Tropic - Sunscreen SPF30
I always like sunscreens and I apply them religiously. I have tried this already and it absorbs quickly and doesn't leave any trace of greasy feeling. It also has a light scent which goes away quickly. Like it!

Girly Bow on Red and Black Nails

0

This design reminds me of cheerleaders!! The red and black chevron tip with the gold lining looks just like a cheerleading uniform to me! Of course, the bow adds the extra girly accent!

To make the chevron tip, I simply painted straight strokes with black polish once the red polish had dried. Then I used a gold nail striper at the boundary line to add a little glittery effect.

For the accent nail, I painted the red tip over the nude color, and painted the bow on with the white polish first. Then I used a black nail striper to outline the bow and the curved tip. I finished off the design with a gold jewel at the centre of the bow and some red polka dots on the nude base color. I also added some red glitter on the black pinky nail. Cute right?

Polishes:
Nude and Black: Sephora Formula X
Red: Nickak #139
Nail Stripers: Color Club Art Club striper pack
Red Glitter: an old bottle which I do not have the name

OPI Mariah Carey 18K White Gold Review

0

You heard it right! The gold glitter polish is OPI Mariah Carey's line 18K White Gold and Silver Top Coat. That might be the fanciest polish I own, in terms of ingredients. It also comes in a fancy box with clear window cover.

The glitter in the polish is a combination of white gold in non-uniform sized flakes and silver dust. I would say overall it is in between a white/silver color and a yellow-toned gold color. It is definitely not a true gold-colored glitter. I think there is another yellow gold glitter polish by OPI in the Gwen Stefani's line, with a little bigger size of flakes and I need to hunt that down! I know both of these are quite hard to find now.

The polish applies quite nicely, after all it is OPI. I used a total of 2 coats to achieve this look. Next time, I will try sponging the glitter on so I can get a more intense result with less layers.

This manicure is quite simple mainly to showcase the glitter, with a combination of green, gold, and white. On the accent nail, I added some vertical lines with staggering lengths. I actually quite like the finish look of it!

What do you think of this 18K gold glitter?

Polishes;
Glitter: OPI Mariah Carey's line 18K White Gold and Silver Top Coat
Green: NYC
White: Wet' n Wild
Gold: Sally Hansen - Golden-I

Camo Nails x Jordan XX8

0

Nike Jordan XX8 Camo, enough said! Camouflage pattern is actually easier to make than I have expected. This was my first time trying to do the patter, not bad right?

For the camo nails, I used a mid-tone green base color then I used a few other shades of green and earth-toned color polishes and messily painted over it, directly from the polish brush. I did random non-uniform lines to achieve the look. I used a black polish at the end for the messy lines and we are done!

Polishes:
Shades of green and earth-toned colors: NYC, Daiso, Sephora Formula X, Joe Fresh
Black: Sephora Formula X

Black and Red Ombre Nails

0

Not too shabby for the first time! This was my first attempt for an ombre effect after trying the color combo on a nail wheel. Now I realized I didn't do it correctly. But hey, I think they turned out alright :D

I used a cosmetic wedge shaped sponge for the ombre and did not know that I would need both the red AND black for the sponging. After the red base had dried, I only applied the black polish onto the sponge and then light sponged it on. I did a total of 2 layers of the black sponging. Then I used a matte top coat for a softer effect.

Now that I have tried sponging a few more times, and saw more videos on Instagram, I realized that applying the base color (in this case, red) onto the sponge, as well as the black would make the transition a little smoother.

Polishes:
Red - Nickak #139

Red and Gold Sparkling Nails

0

There are so many festival occasions in the year that can use a red and gold bling bling glitter nails! Here's a super simple combo I created with a red base color and gold add-ons. On the accent nail, I first put a gold jewel and but thought that wasn't enough, so I added some polka dots.

For the rest of the nails, I painted the tip with a clear coat and then dipped the nail into a pot of gold glitter, then I slightly pressed the glitter on the nail to make sure they adhere well. And we are done!

Tips:
  • You may want to apply a top coat before the glitter and just leave the glitter on without a top coat over, that might create a more textured effect.
  • Or you can also apply top coat at the very end to seal everything and that can get you a little longer wear before the polish chipping.

Polishes:
Red - Nickak #139 (gorgeous deep red, opaque in ONE coat!!)
Gold - Sally Hansen #485 Golden-I

Using Stickers for Nailart

0

There are lots of tools around your home for creating nailart! Here I was trying to see what I can make with these colorful stationery stickers. I used a pair of zigzag edge scissors to cut a circle sticker down the middle and put them onto the red polished nail. Then I used a contrasting gold polish and painted a thick layer on.

For the other those fingers, I just used the entire circle and stick them on one side, as a guideline of the curved side stroke of gold polish. Easy!

Tips:
  • Wait for the base color to be completely dry before putting the sticker on. If needed, a fast dry clear coat can be used.
  • Press the sticker firmly down to avoid any gaps between the sticker and the nail.
  • Use an opaque top color.
  • Peel off the sticker right away after applying the top color.

Stamping with Grey and Black

0

"It's stamping, it's not nailart." I saw this quote somewhere on Instagram and I do NOT agree! Yes, stamping can be very easy and quick but it does require a lot of practice and the use of right tools.

I was testing out my new stamping plates I ordered from eBay for this manicure, therefore every nail has a different patter :P.

To guys who might not know how stamping works:
  1. Paint the polish on the pattern on the stamping plate.
  2. Scrape the polish off the surface with the scraper, polish will still be inside the indent of the pattern.
  3. Use the rubber stamp to pickup the polish.
  4. Quickly stamp (roll) the pattern onto the nail.

Tips:
  • Use contrasting colors of polishes
  • It is better to use an opaque and creamy color for the stamping
  • How well the stamp transfer depends greatly on the quality of the stamping plate (I have a few plates that the polish would not transfer onto the rubber stamp)
  • Work quickly
  • Practice!

Greyish Purple and Gold Wedge Classy Nails

0

Sometimes I like to call this style of nails "work nails" as they are simple, classy and wearable for any occasion. Thanks to my hand model JL again here for this nude greyish purple nails with gold wedge combo!

After waiting for the base color to be completely dry, we used some Scotch tape to create the straight edge for the gold polish. I would recommend sticking the tape onto the skin first to take away some adhesiveness before putting it onto the nail, so it can be removed easier.

All colors - Sephora Formula X

Purple French Tip with Hearts

0

White french nails are out of trend! Colored ones are the way to go! Another simple purple french tips with cute hearts.

I added the darker purple on the light purple base as the french tip. Then I used a silver color to draw a straight line across with a small pointy brush. I also used the same color to draw hearts on selective nails, then I outlined the hearts with a black polish, trying to be as steady as I could! Apply top coat and that's it!

Polishes:
Dark Purple - Kinetics
Light Purple - Forever21
Silver and Black - Sephora Formula X, used with a small pointy brush
